Masters Games

A group of veterans from the Woodside Cricket Club will be competing in the Australasian Masters Games to be held in Adelaide from 5-14 October 2007. To qualify for the Masters, participants need to be a minimum of 35 years of age. However, the average age of the woodside squad won't be less than 44! Teams will be competing in a Super 8's format where each member of an 8-man team has to bowl at least one over, but with modified rules such as wides and no-balls counting for 2 runs, the extra pressure on these aging competitors may take its toll in the scorebook. Matches consist of a maximum of 14 six-ball overs bowled by each side.
Squad members are preparing for their assault on the Games by training at the Mt Barker indoor nets one night a week. The local pharmacy has been inundated with requests for deep-heat and other muscle relaxing tonics. Two local businessmen, Mark Jericho from the Woodside Hotel and Jim Hennessy from the Woodside Caltex Service Station have sponsored the team with the provision of shirts and caps, so even if the team doesn't end up performing brilliantly at the Games, at least they will all look the part. Five members of this current squad will be competing in their second Masters Games, having participated in the inaugural Woodside team in the 10th Australian Masters Games in 2005.
