Peter Johns
Peter arrived in Woodside with his wife Cynthia in 1968 after teaching at Terowie in the mid North for 5 years. Woodside Primary in those days had 6 classes and 6 teachers who made up the whole staff. Many of student’s fathers were overseas serving in Vietnam at the time.
He began coaching Football Juniors for Onkas the same year and continued coaching and being on Junior Committees for many years, becoming a Life Member in the 80’s. About this time older son Tim wanted to play cricket but he was too young for the Under 16s so Peter formed an under 12 team and played in the Adelaide Hills Comp. “What about me” was the call from younger brother Nick who was too young for the Under 12s, SO, father formed an Under 10 team and played in a Mt Barker Comp. As the TVCA Junior Coordinator Peter was successful in helping to establish, after many attempts, the local Under 10s, 12s and 14s comps that we have today. All club training in the early days was based at the school because they had the only nets in town. Numbers of juniors grew. At one stage we had 3 Under 13 teams.
Peter has continued to work in the Junior and Senior Committees over the years. He is the longest serving committee person of the Woodside Cricket Club. He has served for over 20 seasons in positions from vice-president, assistant secretary, scores officer and committee person. He is officially the first and at this stage, the only, Club Legend, an honour that was bestowed on him at the end-of-season presentation in March 2010.
After 24 years teaching at Woodside he was transferred to Gumeracha where he established and coached their first Under 10 and Under 12 teams.
Back home Tim and Nick were progressing through the various junior and senior grades, giving dad great pleasure in watching their achievements at Club and Association level. Tim was a member of the 94/95 A-Grade Premiership Team before he moved to Victoria, and Nick is still chasing the dream of being in a similar team (this Year perhaps). Peter is also following the beginnings of the next generation as Nick’s sons Nicholas and Patrick play in the under 10s (with their Dad as Coach!).
The success of the Woodside club at junior level could not have been achieved without his planning and input. For the past few seasons Peter has co-ordinated senior trainings which has been an immense help to the club coach and senior captain. Just to complete his week at the club, he can be seen cooking the BBQ and then processing the scores in his capacity as scores officer. Although according to club records, he has played only 2 games of senior cricket, he has been an integral part of making Woodside the best club in the Torrens Valley Cricket Association. Therefore there is no other name that can be attached to any club award than Peter Johns.
Sadly Peter passed away on May 19th, 2015 after a long battle with illness.
